Kelaniya Temple
The traditional Sri Lankan dagoba (from which the word "pagoda" is derived) is a bell-shaped mound of earth and bricks surmounted by a square platfrom above which rises a tapering spire topped by a gilded spiky ornament. The whole structure is plastered white and is usually surrounded by a walled courtyard containing statues of Buddha, flower altars and possibly a Bo (peepul) tree. |

On the Southern side of the Parakrama Samudra (Polonnaruwa) is a striking stone colossus of a beared man holding in his hands what seems to be a york. The care-worn expression hints at royalty and popular belief identifies it as Parakramabahu the Greate.
